Saddam Hussein, not least because he was also from Tikrit (although Saladin was a Kurd), fashioned himself as the genuine article – fighting (twice) the infidel Christian armies of the US. He is now no more than a martyr for a minority. Osama bin Laden carefully fashioned his iconography as a cross between Saladin, Che Guevara and the Prophet Mohammed. But as in the immortal line in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, “his methods are unsound”; despite the marketing success in the expansion of the al-Qaeda brand, bin Laden will never be able to capture the collective conscious of the ummah. Muslim Rajputs – Who are they?
Muslim Rajputs (more commonly known as Musalman Rajputs within India and Pakistan) are Rajputs who practice Islam.
Rajputs (Urdu: راجپوت, Hindi: राजपूत) were the warrior and ruling clans of India during the classical period, i.e. 8-13th century. They originally hailed from the historical state of Rajputana, which is in Rajasthan.
The term Rajput is traditionally applied to the original Suryavanshi, Chandravanshi and Agnivanshi clans.
The 1931 census of British India was the last to record caste affiliation in a manner that provides reliable information on Rajput demographics. Any present-day estimates are therefore speculative; they also vary widely.
The 1931 census reported a total of 10.7 million people self-describing as Rajput. Of this population, about 8.6 million people also self-described as being Hindu, about 2.1 million as being Muslim and about 50,000 as being Sikh by religion. Continue reading

Director’s Titanic find: ‘Christ’s coffin’
The findings of a controversial documentary claiming that a cave found 26 years ago in Jerusalem held the remains of Jesus Christ have been unveiled in New York.
The documentary, titled The Burial Cave of Jesus, follows years of research by world-renowned archaeologists and experts in ancient scripts, according to the film’s producers.
The 2000-year-old cave was first discovered in 1980 in Jerusalem’s Talpiyot neighbourhood.
It contained 10 coffins, six of which bore inscriptions which – translated into English – included the names “Jesus son of Joseph,” twice “Maria”, and “Judah son of Jesus.” Continue reading

Although popular bigotry and political opportunism certainly play a role, part of the West’s confusion over Islamic charities arises because the Qur’an supports an economic ideology very different from the canons of savage capitalism so beloved of today’s bond brokers and televangelists. Islamic ethic imposes on Muslims as their primary duty the creation of a just society that treats the poor with respect. It favors equity over economic hierarchy, cooperation over unscrupulous competition, and charitable redistribution over selfish accumulation. Saint Catherine’s Monastery, Mount Sinai
St. Catherine’s Monastery possesses some of the earliest icons in existence, including this 6th-century hot wax icon.The monastery was built by order of Emperor Justinian I between 527 and 565, enclosing the Chapel of the Burning Bush ordered built by Helena, the mother of Constantine I, at the site where Moses is supposed to have seen the burning bush; the living bush on the grounds is purportedly the original. The site is sacred to three major world religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

According to a document in the possession of the monastery purportedly signed by Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) himself, Prophet Mohammed(pbuh) gave his protection to the monastery after it granted, at some point, political asylum to Prophet Mohammed(pbuh) from his enemies. For this reason, and because a Fatimid mosque was built within the walls of the monastery, the monastery survived Islamic dominance of the region over many centuries. The mosque is sealed and has never been used, since it is oriented incorrectly with Mecca.
