Disaster magnitude stuns nation | Quake turns Muzaffarabad into ghost town | Scared people spend night in the open | Tentative death toll put at 20,000 | Hundreds of children believed buried in debris

ISLAMABAD, Oct 9: The magnitude of the disaster caused by Saturday’s massive earthquake stunned the nation as the first relief teams reached the worst-hit areas in Azad Kashmir and northern Pakistan on Sunday.

Initial estimates confirmed fears that the death toll would be in the thousand, with official sources citing a tentative figure of 20,000.

Millions of people struck by the tragedy continued to live in awe the day after, as repeated aftershocks and the grim news that about 20,000 people had been counted dead, and 42,000 injured so far, reminded them that the danger was not over. http://www.dawn.com/2005/10/10/top1.htm

How to donate to the Pakistan Earthquake Appeal

Please consider a donation!
There are a number of options for donations. From what I can gather, Muslim Aid is operating on the ground and getting aid out to people and places in need.

Muslim Aid
Muslim Aid Australia
This is the web link, one can specify where one wants the money to go.

Red Cross and Red Crescent IFRC have also launched an appeal and have operations in place.

There is also a tracing service available through Red Cross Australia. They have a 72 hours assessment period following any disaster, but after this time enquiries can be directed through them for missing relatives. The co ordinator of the operation is Hamish Lindsay (contact number 9229 4233). They have suggested waiting until around Thursday though before enquiries are made.

Medicins Sans Frontieres MSF also have staff on the ground and you can donate on their website.

Oxfam Oxfam is on the ground and collecting donations

Other Options
In Hong Kong PIA has offered to send equipment free of charge to the disaster zone. There is a need for ventilators and the community in Hong Kong are buying them in bulk and sending them with PIA. Blankets, clothes and food can all be bought in Pakistan from donations which have been made but there is a shortage of ventilators.

Torture of Iraqis was for “stress relief”, say US soldiers

By Neil Mackay

FOR the first time, American soldiers who personally tortured Iraqi prisoners have come forward to give testimony to human rights organisations about crimes they committed.
Three soldiers, a captain and two sergeants from the 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Mercury near Fallujah in Iraq have told Human Rights Watch how prisoners were tortured both as a form of stress relief and as a way of breaking them for interrogation sessions.
