Muhammad Ali Jinnah<\/strong> (Urdu<\/a>: \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0639\u0644\u0649 \u062c\u0646\u0627\u062d; also spelled Mohammad<\/strong> or Mahomed Ali Jinnah<\/strong>) (December 25<\/a>, 1876<\/a> \u2013 September 11<\/a>, 1948<\/a>) was an Indian<\/a> Muslim<\/a> politician<\/a> and statesman<\/a> who led the All India Muslim League<\/a> and founded Pakistan<\/a>, serving as its first Governor-General<\/a>. He is commonly known in Pakistan as Quaid-e-Azam<\/strong> (Urdu: \u0642\u0627\u0626\u062f \u0627\u0639\u0638\u0645 \u2014 “Great Leader”) and Baba-i-Qaum<\/em> (“Father of the Nation<\/a>“); his birth and death anniversaries are national holidays<\/a> in Pakistan. As a student and young lawyer, Jinnah rose to prominence in the Indian National Congress<\/a>, expounded Hindu<\/a>-Muslim unity, shaped the 1916 Lucknow Pact<\/a> between the Congress and the Muslim League, and was a key leader in the All India Home Rule League<\/a>. Differences with Mohandas Gandhi<\/a> led Jinnah to quit the Congress. He then took charge of the Muslim League and proposed a fourteen-point constitutional reform plan to safeguard the political rights of Muslims in a self-governing India.
