Listening to the US media, even the most diligent news junkie would find it difficult to know that the U.S. State Department played not only a vital role in the\u00a0violence and chaos<\/a>\u00a0underway in Ukraine but was also complicit in creating the coup that ousted democratically elected President Viktor Yanuyovch.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Given the Russian Parliament\u2019s approval of Putin\u2019s request for military troops to be moved into Crimea, Americans uninformed about the\u00a0history<\/a>\u00a0of that region might also be persuaded that Russia is the\u00a0aggressor<\/a>\u00a0and the sole perpetrator of the violence.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s be clear about what is at stake here:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0NATO missiles<\/a>\u00a0on the adjacent Ukraine border aimed directly at Russia would make that country extremely vulnerable to Western goals and destabilization efforts while threatening Russia\u2019s only water access to its naval fleet in Crimean peninsula, the Balkans, the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East \u2013 and not the least of which would\u00a0allow world economic\u00a0dominance<\/a>by the US, the European Union, the IMF, World Bank and international financiers all of whom had already brought staggering suffering to millions around the globe.<\/p>\n

The fact is that democracy was not a demand on the streets of Kiev.\u00a0 The current record of events indicates that protests of civil dissatisfaction were organized by reactionary\u00a0neo-Nazi forces<\/a>\u00a0intent on fomenting a major domestic crisis ousting Ukraine\u2019s legitimate government.\u00a0\u00a0 As events continue to spiral out of control, here is the chronology of \u00a0how the coup was\u00a0 engineered to install a government more favorable to EU and US goals.<\/p>\n

April 11, 2011\u00a0\u2013 A\u00a0Kiev Post<\/a>\u00a0article entitled \u201cUkraine Hopes to Get $1.5 Billion from IMF in June<\/i>\u201d states that the loan is dependent on pension cuts while\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cmaintaining cooperation with the IMF, since\u00a0it influences the country\u2019s interaction with other international financial institutions and private investors<\/em>\u201d and further that the \u201cattraction<\/em>\u00a0of $850 million from the World Bank in 2011,\u00a0depended on cooperation with the IMF<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Well, that about says it all \u2013 if Ukraine played ball. then the loan money would pour in.<\/p>\n

November 21, 2013<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 \u00a0fast forward to the EU summit in Lithuania when President Yanuyovch\u00a0 embarrassed the European Union by\u00a0rejecting<\/a>\u00a0its Agreement in favor of joining Russia\u2019s Common Union with other Commonwealth Independent States.<\/p>\n

November 27, 2013\u00a0\u2013 it was not until February 23, 2014 when\u00a0 Anonymous Ukraine hackers\u00a0released<\/a>\u00a0a series of emails from a Lithuanian government advisor to opposition leader and former boxer Vitaly Klitschko regarding plans to destabilize Ukraine; for example:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur American friends promise to pay a visit in the coming days, we may even see\u00a0Nuland<\/em>\u00a0or someone from the\u00a0Congress.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 12\/7\/2013<\/p>\n

\u201cYour colleague has arrived \u2026.his services may be required even after the country is destabilized.\u201d 12\/14\/2013<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019ve paved the way for more radical escalation of the situation.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it time to proceed with more decisive action?\u201d 1\/9\/2014<\/p>\n

November 29, 2013\u00a0–\u00a0 well-orchestrated protestors were\u00a0already in the streets<\/a>\u00a0of Kiev as European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso announced that the EU would \u201cnot accept Russia\u2019s veto<\/a>\u201d of the Agreement.<\/p>\n

December 13, 2013\u00a0\u2013 As if intent on providing incontrovertible evidence of US involvement in Ukraine, Assistant US Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Victoria Nuland proudly told a\u00a0\u00a0meeting<\/a>\u00a0of the International Business Conference sponsored by the US-Ukrainian Foundation that the US had \u2018invested\u2019 more than $5 billion and \u2018fiveyears worth<\/a>\u00a0of work and preparation\u201d in achieving what she called Ukraine\u2019s \u2018European aspirations.\u201d Having just returned from her\u00a0third trip to Ukraine in five weeks,<\/em>\u00a0Nuland boasted of her \u2018coordinated high level diplomacy\u2019 and a more than two hour \u2018tough conversation\u2019 with Yanukovych.\u00a0 Already familiar with Nuland as former Secretary Clinton\u2019s spokesperson at State, one can imagine her discourteous tone and manner when she says she made it \u201cabsolutely clear\u201d to Yanukovych that the US required \u201cimmediate steps\u201d \u2026to \u201cget back into conversation with Europe and the IMF.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0While Western media have portrayed Yanukovych as a \u2018weak\u2019 leader, Nuland\u2019s description of a \u2018tough\u2019 meeting can only mean that he resisted her threats and intimidations.\u00a0 In what must have been a touching moment, Nuland spoke about a show of force by government police on demonstrators who \u201csang hymns and prayed for peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Nuland did not reveal on December 13 was that her meetings with \u2018key Ukrainian stakeholders\u2019 included neo-Nazi\u00a0Svoboda party leader<\/a>Oleh Tyahnybok and\u00a0 prime minister wannabe Arsenly Yatsenyuk of the Fatherland Party.\u00a0\u00a0 At about the same time Nuland was\u00a0wooing fascist extremists<\/a>, Sen. John McCain (R-Az) and Sen. Chris Murphy (D- Conn)shared the stage<\/a>\u00a0in Kiev with Tyahnybok offering their support and opposition to the sitting government.\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0Svoboda party<\/a>\u00a0which has roots with extreme vigilante and anti-semitic groups has since received at least three high level cabinet posts in the interim government including deputy prime minister.\u00a0\u00a0 There is no doubt that the progenies of west Ukraine\u2019s historic neo-fascist thugs that fought with Hitler are now aligned with the US as represented by Victoria Nuland.<\/p>\n

January 24, 2014\u00a0\u2013 President Yanukoyvch identified\u00a0foreign elements<\/a>participating in Kiev protests warning that armed radicals were a danger to peaceful citizens.\u00a0 Independent news<\/a>\u00a0agencies also reported that \u201cnot all of Kiev\u2019s population backs opposition rule, which depends mainly on a group from the former Polish town of Lvov, which holds sway over Kiev downtown \u2013 but not the rest of the city.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

January 30, 2014\u00a0\u2013 \u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0State Department\u2019s website<\/a>\u00a0Media Note announced Nuland\u2019s upcoming travel plans that \u201dIn Kyiv, Assistant Secretary Nuland will meet with government officials,\u00a0opposition leaders<\/em>, civil society and business leaders to\u00a0encourage agreement on a new government and plan of action.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 In other words, almost a month before President Yanukovych was ousted, the US was planning to rid the world of another independently elected President.<\/p>\n

February 4, 2014\u00a0–\u00a0 More evidence of Ms. Nuland\u2019s meddling with extremist factions and the high level stakes of war and peace occurred in her\u00a0taped conversation<\/a>\u00a0with U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt discussing their calculations of who\u2019s in and who\u2019s out to replace Yanukovych. \u00a0\u00a0Note mention of Nazi leader Oleh Tyahnybok.\u00a0 \u00a0Here are some selected excerpts:<\/p>\n

Nuland:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n

Pyatt:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI think we\u2019re in play\u2026 the [Vitali] Klitsch piece is obviously the complicated electron here especially the announcement of him as deputy prime minister. Your argument to him which you\u2019ll need to make,\u00a0 I think the next phone call\u00a0 we want to set up is exactly the one you made to Yats [Yatsenyuk].\u00a0 And I\u2019m glad you sort of put him on the spot on where he fits in this scenario and I\u2019m very glad he said what he said in response.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nuland: \u00a0\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t think Klitsch should go into government. I don\u2019t think its necessary. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pyatt:\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u201cyeah\u2026I mean I guess.\u00a0 You think\u2026what\u2026in terms of him not going into the government,\u00a0 just let him sort of stay out and do his political homework and stuff.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m just thinking in terms of\u00a0 the process moving ahead, we want to keep the moderate democrats together.\u00a0\u00a0The problem is going to be Tyahnybok<\/em>\u00a0and his guys.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure that\u2019s what Yanukoyvch \u00a0is calculating on all this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nuland:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI think Yats is the guy who\u2019s got the economic experience, the governing experience. \u00a0What he needs is Klitsch and\u00a0Tyahnybok\u00a0<\/em>on the outside and he needs to be talking to them four times a week you know\u2026I think with Klitsch going in at that level working for Yats, it\u2019s not going to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nuland:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cMy understanding is that the big three [Yatsenyuk, Klitsch and Tyahnybok] were going in to their own meeting and that Yats was going to offer in that context a three plus one conversation with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pyatt:\u00a0 \u201c That\u2019s what he proposed but knowing the dynamic that\u2019s been with them where\u00a0 Klitsch has been top dog;\u00a0 he\u2019s going to take a while to show up at a meeting, he\u2019s probably talking to his guys at this point so I think you reaching out to him will help with the personality management among the three and\u00a0gives us a chance to move fast on all this stuff\u00a0<\/b><\/em>and put us behind it before they all sit down<\/b>\u00a0and he explains why he doesn\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nuland:\u00a0 \u2026 \u201cwhen I talked to Jeff Feltman this morning, he had a new name for the UN\u00a0 guy \u2026Robert Serry\u00a0 \u2013 he\u2019s now gotten both Serry andBan ki Moon<\/a>\u00a0to agree that Serry could come in Monday or Tuesday\u2026 so that would be great I think\u00a0 to help glue this thing and\u00a0have the UN help glue it and you know fuck the EU.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Pyatt:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cExactly.\u00a0\u00a0 I think\u00a0we\u2019ve got to do something to make it stick<\/em>together because you can be pretty sure the Russians will be working behind the scenes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2026.Let me work on Klitchko and I think we want to get somebody with an international personality to come out here and \u00a0help midwife this thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nuland:\u00a0 \u201d\u2026Sullivan\u2019s come back to me saying you need Biden\u00a0 and \u00a0I said probably tomorrow for an\u201d \u2018atta\u2019 boy\u2019 and get the deeds to stick\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 so Biden\u2019s willing.\u201d<\/p>\n

February 20, 2014\u00a0\u2013\u00a0\u00a0 Foreign ministers from Poland, Germany and France visiting Kiev secured President Yanukovych\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0agreement<\/a>\u00a0that would commit the government to an interim administration, constitutional reform and new parliamentary and presidential elections.\u00a0 With\u00a0\u201cno clear sign that EU or US pressure\u00a0<\/em>has achieved\u201d the desired effect,\u00a0opposition<\/a>\u00a0leaders rejected Yanukovych\u2019s compromise which would have ended the three month stand-off.\u00a0 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on the German, French and Polish\u00a0foreign ministers to step in<\/a>\u00a0and take responsibility for upholding the deal they helped forge and not let \u201carmed extremists<\/a>\u201d directly threaten Ukrainian sovereignty.<\/p>\n

February 21,\u00a0<\/sup>2014\u00a0 –\u00a0 At a special summit in Brussels, European foreign ministers\u00a0agreed to adopt<\/a>\u00a0sanctions on Ukraine including visa bans and asset freezes. The EU decision followed\u00a0\u201cimmense pressure from the US for the European powers to take punitive action against the Ukrainian regime.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Washington had already imposed travel bans on 20 leading Ukrainians.<\/p>\n

February 22, 2014\u00a0\u2013\u00a0 An hour after\u00a0refusing to resign<\/a>, the Ukrainian Parliament voted, according to Russian president Vladimir Putin, in anunconstitutional action<\/a>\u00a0to oust President Yanukovych and that pro-EU forces\u00a0staged a \u2018coup\u2019<\/a>. \u00a0Yanukovych departed Kiev in fear for his life.<\/p>\n

March 1, 2014\u00a0\u2013 During a\u00a0conversation<\/a>\u00a0initiated by the vice president, Biden delivered his \u2018atta boy\u2019 with a phone call to newly installed prime minister Arseniy\u00a0Yatsenyuk\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0reaffirming US support for Ukraine\u2019s \u2018territorial integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n

All of the above machinations expose an incoherent and corrupt American foreign policy with a litany of US hypocrisy that might be hilarious if not for potentially grave global implications.\u00a0\u00a0 The comment \u201cyou just don\u2019t behave by invading another country on completely trumped up pretext\u201d might just win Secretary of State John Kerry the Hypocrisy of the Year Award.\u00a0\u00a0 Kerry, of course, famously supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq seeking weapons of mass destruction.<\/p>\n

But then again, the President\u2019s own\u00a0comments<\/a>\u00a0that \u201c..countries have deep concerns and suspicions about this kind of meddling..\u201d and that \u201c\u2026as long as none of us are inside Ukraine trying to meddle and intervene.. with decisions that properly belong to Ukrainian people\u2026\u201d while\u00a0 announcing\u00a0\u00a0$1 billion aid<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0package to Ukraine (but not Detroit) would be a close runner-up for the Award.<\/p>\n
