Perception is not reality. Due to the right wing’s influence and propaganda, people mistakenly think that Islamic terrorism is the greatest threat to the Western world. It is even a commonly held belief that Islamic terrorism poses an existential threat–that the very survival of the Western world is at stake. Of course, the reality is that there are other groups that engage in terrorism on a much larger scale, yet these terrorist incidents are minimized. Acts of terrorism committed by Muslims are purposefully sensationalized and focused upon, culminating in the idea that “(nearly) all terrorists are Muslims.”

Far from proposing a fresh program aimed at political control, this type of Salafism offers the bitter fruit of a depoliticized Islam and an ideological narrative that argues for withdrawing from western society, avoiding it: a community based on faith replaces one based on culture (Tunisian, Moroccan) and is very critical of the traditional Islam practiced by ordinary families. In this way Salafism builds its own sectarian logic. Silent on the issue of the hijab, its protagonists offer no help when imams are expelled and they do not take part in demonstrations of solidarity with Palestine.

The difference between the true Muslim approach and the western approach is that Islam is based on co-existence and acculturation, while the dominant western civilization was based on the elimination of native people, settling in their land and expropriating their wealth after characterizing them as backward, primitive and ignorant to justify exterminating them.

It is about “God’s . . . favorite team.” His favorite nation. His favorite Christian religion cradling “His only Son” and “Saviour of the world.” It is actually about an “endless war’s” roar of ethnocentric patriotism and imperialistic Christianity drowning out the reason of democratic humanness.
It is about the American flag covering and suffocating to death over one million Iraqi civilians, uprooting over four million more, destroying a country’s life-sustaining infrastructure, triggering terrible sectarian violence to this day, and unjustly sacrificing American lives and resources in a war based on lies. A criminal war launched by a self-professed “Christ . . . changed my heart . . . I pray daily . . . for peace,” American president. An openly religious president who repeatedly redefined America’s blatant so-called “Operation Iraqi Freedom” war crime as an act of God: “Freedom is not America’s gift to the world, it is Almighty God’s gift to every man and woman in this world.” And a significant majority of evangelical Christians said “Amen!” While many others said nothing.

There is no better example of this than the crusades blessed by the popes. When the crusaders conquered Jerusalem in 1099, they massacred 30,000 Muslims and Jews. Contrast this with the compassion and magnanimity of the illustrious Saladin when he recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. He not only protected the Christian community — along with the Jews — but also their places of worship.

Contrary to popular belief Iran is not an Islamic state as outlined by the Quran and Sunnah. In Sunni Islam the Caliphate with the Caliph elected by the people is the benchmark whilst Shia Islam considers an infallible Imam appointed by Allah(SWT) as the legitimate ruler over the Islamic state. To understand the true reality of Iran one needs to consider the actual constitutional foundations of post-revolutionary Iran. An examination of the Iranian political system and comparison with the Islamic state of Muhammad(SAW) will reveal Iran as very much a man-making legislative quasi democracy couched in an Islamic garb which differs from the Western model only to the extent that it does not incorporate liberal social values in it’s political culture; it is not a ‘liberal democracy’ so to speak.

What is probably the oldest known Bible is being digitised, reuniting its scattered parts for the first time since its discovery 160 years ago. It is markedly different from its modern
equivalent. What’s left out?
